filmvocab (filmvocab.com) helps you learn the English words of the films and series you watch. This page explains what we keep about you, why, who else sees it, and how to have it removed. Questions: [email protected].

What we keep

• Without an account. A cookie named s holds a random session identifier. Against it we keep your films, word lists, review history and settings (translation and interface language, theme, time zone). All of it is deleted two months after your last visit.
• With an account. Your email address, a display name, and your password as an Argon2 hash, never in plain text; plus the same learning data and settings, your review reminder hour if you set one.
• Films you add. The subtitle files you upload or pick from a search, and the names you give them.
• Apps and tokens. If you connect an AI assistant or create a personal token: the app's name and address, when it was connected and last used, and the token itself as a hash.
• Notifications. If you turn them on for a device: the push address your browser gives us and the keys to encrypt messages to it.
• Short-lived technical data. Your IP address and browser identification limit how often forms can be sent and let us count visitors. They stay in memory for at most two days and are never written to our database: visitor counts keep only totals per day, page and referring site.

We keep no request logs. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, sell data, or follow you across other sites.

What we use it for

• Running the service: listing your words, translating them, scheduling reviews.
• Email you asked for: confirming your address, resetting your password, changing your email, and review reminders if you turn them on.
• Keeping the service safe from abuse, and understanding overall use through the anonymous counts above.

Who else handles data

• Cloudflare carries all traffic to the site, protects it, and checks that sign-ups and password resets come from people (Turnstile).
• Yandex (dictionary and translation) and Google Cloud Natural Language receive English words and subtitle text to translate and analyse, never who you are.
• Wiktionary receives single English words for their definitions.
• OpenSubtitles and other subtitle sites receive the titles you search for.
• Backblaze stores encrypted backups of our database for about five weeks.
• Your browser's push service (for example Google's or Mozilla's) delivers the notifications you turn on.
• AI assistants you connect, such as Claude or ChatGPT, receive what their tools read, as you allow when you connect them.

How long we keep it

• Without an account: two months after your last visit.
• With an account: until you delete it. Backups keep a copy for about five weeks after that.
• Our mail server keeps delivery logs (address and time) for ten days.

Your choices

On the account page you can change your name, email and password, disconnect apps, revoke tokens and delete your account with everything in it. The word list can be downloaded as a file. Reminders and notifications can be turned off in the review settings or from any reminder email. For anything else, such as a copy of your data, a correction or an objection, write to [email protected]; you can also complain to your data protection authority.

Children

filmvocab is not meant for children under 13. If you believe a child has given us data, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes

When this policy changes, we update this page and its date; important changes are also announced on the site.
